Meet Josh Brass – by Eliza Ault-Connell AM

14 July 2020

Josh Brass is a pocket rocket of dynamo proportions. When asked about just how many sports he participates in he says “I just do heaps, I can't keep track!'

Josh, who is originally from New Zealand but now resides in Queensland Australia, goes on to name track, tennis, obstacle course racing, triathlons, swimming and personal training to name a few. His attitude towards life and being active

is insatiable. When asked about his dream sport to get involved in he is quick to answer ice hockey, because he adores being on the ice and loves going fast.

Josh describes himself a more a solo sports person however his mum Abby points out his skills transfer well to team sports as he gets a bit older and starts to makes more friends in the sporting circles. Abby's philosophy about raising a son with a disability has been one of allowing Josh to thrive with a life of normalcy. She has dreams like any other parent, for him to finish school, get a degree or perhaps compete at the Paralympics, move out of home, get married, own a home, have kids, just live a nice relatively normal life.

Many people told Abby when Josh was young about what he couldn’t do and would miss out on, but the Brass family's mantra of you can and you will has always allowed Josh to pursue whatever his heart was set on. The Brass family attribute Josh’s full spirited, well-adjusted attitudes to life to the Brass family having a sense of humour and exposing him to rich opportunities allowing Josh to see the world as having no barriers.

When asked about what possible barriers Abby sees for Josh she says “finding one sport that he loves and committing to it."

I asked Abby, "Can you imagine going to the Paralympics and representing your country in 6 or 7 sports?"

"No!" said Abby.

Well, I'm sorry Abby, I'm going to have beg to differ there, if anyone is crazy and talented enough it's the pocket rocket himself Josh Brass!
